2008-2009 MG14 NSW State Championships Report

By Gary Reeves, Class President and skipper of MG338 XANADU

MG14 class veteran Gary Reeves from St George SC and crew for the series Phillip Moore from Toronto Amateur SC sailed XANADU to victory in the 2008-2009 MG14 NSW State Championships held at Illawarra YC over 3 days 10-12 April 2009. By winning the final heat, XANADU took the title in a countback from WATER RAT (Daniel McLachlan & Lindsay Mason, St George SC), reversing the result of the 2007-2008 series in which Lindsay Mason skippered WATER RAT to a win over XANADU.

First place - Gary and PhilIn a series in which light breezes prevailed and in which only 3 heats could be sailed because of an absence of wind on day 2 and for much of day 3, ECLIPSE (Lachlan Pryor & Amanda Waldock, Balmoral SC) also mastered the conditions to finish third in their best series result in their short time in the class, narrowly ahead of FILTHY FASE (Bob Taig & Hayden Domanti, Toronto ASC), current Australian Champion FINAL PHASE (Greg Roche & Cody Smith, Toronto ASC), and WIZARD OF OZ (Rob & Sian Morton, Wallagout Lake BC).prizegiving

The Handicap series was won by ECLIPSE, followed by ASIF (Mike & James Slee, Balmoral SC) and ICARUS (Josh Marks & Iain Wood, Taree SC).

The series was contested by MG14’s from 6 clubs across NSW. Competitors ranged in age from 11 to “well into their 60’s”, and included a good proportion of girls and ladies, couples, and father and son/daughter combinations, as is typical of all MG14 events and fleets. The fleet comprised all recognized hull designs, from a 25 year old Aero 6 to the latest Fever design. The spread of results showed that all were competitive - at least in the light conditions of this event - as demonstrated by the first six places being awarded to a 10 year old Tequila 99, a 3 year old Fever, a 15 year old Aero 9, a 10 year old Force Five and two 3 year old Aero 11b’s. WATER RAT showcased a new lightweight carbon mast, which however in the light conditions did not offer any advantage over the aluminium or aluminium with fiberglass tip masts carried by the rest of the fleet. First and fourth in the championship carried Macdiarmid sails, second Barracouta, third Ian Short, and fifth and sixth Hood.

Sailors and spectators enjoyed the hospitality of the Illawarra YC, the great grassy rigging area, impromptu training on rigging and sailing techniques while waiting for any wind to eventuate, and impromptu micro-sprint races between the 4 Balmoral boats in a small patch of breeze directly in front of the club on an otherwise glassy lake. Thanks go to sailing clothing and gear suppliers ZHIK for providing prizes for the series.
Heat 1 Third Place

was sailed in a 7 - 8 knot north easterly that promised more, but faded towards the end of the race. FINAL PHASE and WATER RAT took the middle route to the windward mark to round narrowly ahead of XANADU coming from the left, and a bunch behind, before FINAL PHASE slipped to third after a sloppy spinnaker set. After the wing mark, WATER RAT managed to make it to the bottom mark without another gybe (while others didn’t), established a comfortable lead over the fleet, and was never threatened for a win. FINAL PHASE overtook XANADU on the downwind sausage leg but positions reversed on the next windward leg and held for the final lap. ECLIPSE and WIZARD OF OZ held 4th and 5th for much of the race but were beaten by a fast finishing SKULKER.
Heat 2

Playing Catchup in light winds on Lake Illawarrastarted in a 5 - 6 knot east - south easterly that progressively shifted towards the NE during the race. FILTHY FASE and FINAL PHASE took the left side from the start to round the windward mark first, closely followed by XANADU, then ECLIPSE, which had taken the right side of the first leg. After the wing mark, FILTHY FASE managed to make it to the bottom mark without another gybe (while others didn’t), established a comfortable lead over the fleet, and was never threatened for a win. As the breeze shifted NE it became more difficult to pass upwind, which was mainly sailed on port tack. FINAL PHASE held out XANADU through several close tussles, with ECLIPSE, WIZARD OF OZ and WATER RAT close behind, until ECLIPSE slipped into 3rd just before the final windward mark. With all boats struggling to carry spinnakers to the gype mark, positions other than first swapped several times. At the bottom mark XANADU rounded in second narrowly ahead of ECLIPSE. While XANADU sailed high to force ECLIPSE to tack away, WATER RAT slipped underneath on what was now an all port tack leg to cross the line second, ahead of XANADU. FINAL PHASE took the straight line route to cross in 4th ahead of ECLIPSE and WIZARD OF OZ.
Heat 3

followed immediately after heat 2 in a 6 - 8 knot NE breeze, and with the course reset. XANADU again sailed the left side of the first leg to round narrowly ahead of WATER RAT, followed by ECLIPSE and the rest of the fleet close behind. After battling to hold off WATER RAT on the first spinnaker leg, XANADU opened a small gap at the bottom mark, in front of ECLIPSE. XANADU gained a little ground upwind, but ECLIPSE closed up on the downwind leg. With positions holding upwind and on the spinnaker leg to the gybe mark and the breeze swinging more NE, XANADU sailed a few boat lengths past the mark before gybing in order to defend against the likely tactics of the two following close behind. As expected, ECLIPSE gybed at the mark and WATER RAT kept on going to gybe late. While ECLIPSE gained a few boat lengths, it was not enough to prevent XANADU taking an all-the-way heat win and a series win on countback. ECLIPSE comfortably held off WATER RAT, while WIZARD OF OZ just held off FILTHY FASE, with ICARUS following in sixth.
